We carry large stocks of PEFC certified oak beams from French saw mills carefully selected for their high quality. Beams can be inspected and picked in the timber yard. Having the stocks ensures quick delivery to site. We have supplied beams for many high quality building projects throughout Cumbria and beyond. Oak has a long history going back for many centuries. It is at the heart and soul of some of Britain’s most beautiful historic buildings due to its great strength and durability. G&S Timber will be happy to discuss your requirements and help make your aspirations develop into a bit of modern history.
Air dried oak beams
Air dried, or part seasoned, oak beams have been cut to size and left to dry naturally for up to 5 years. During the drying process they will shrink and split bringing out all the character associated with traditional beams. Once the moisture has reduced the beams will be much more stable than green beams and an ideal choice when used in frames with large windows as there will be less chance of movement. Air dried beams have a silvery grey appearance but they can be planed to reveal the original oak colour beneath the surface. We can provide this service if required.
Green oak beams (fresh sawn)
Green oak beams have recently been sawn from a newly felled oak tree.We offer green oak beams cut to any size from 100mm x 100mm to 450mm x 450mm up to a maximum length of 9 metres.
Generally all our beams are sawn from the centre of the tree ( this is known as boxed heart ) - these beams are sapwood free and the moisture content will exceed 50%.
We can provide green beams either ungraded or graded to D30 or D40.

Visually Strength Graded Service for structural beams
Beams can be visually strength graded to meet BS5756 by our sales director Shaun Stevenson. At present, we are the only company in Cumbria able to provide this service in-house.
If you're undergoing a new build or extension, the local Council's building control will insist on all structural timbers being CE marked and with a structural grade (D30, D40 or THA or THB grade). We can grade to all these and all beams are supplied with a certificate and the grader’s unique number stamped on each beam.
Oak beam trusses
Working with architects we can produce all kinds of trusses made to order by expert craftsmen. Oak trusses are great structural features and will add long-term value to any building development.
