Oak has a long history going back for many centuries. It is at the heart and soul of some of Britain’s most beautiful historic buildings due to its great strength and durability. G&S Timber will be happy to discuss your requirements and help make your aspirations develop into a bit of modern history!
Quality of Oak Beams
Timber, as a natural material, is subject to growth defects that can significantly affect its properties and strength. Please note: It is important to establish the right quality of oak beams required for the job. G & S Timber offers three options.
Visually Strength Graded to BS 5756
Graded oak oak beams to BS 5756 means that they meet the BS standard. All graded oak oak beams will be accompanied with a certificate and the grader’s unique number stamped on each beam. Graded oak beams will include knots and may include sapwood.
Ungraded Oak Beams
Ungraded oak beams do not carry the charge of grading and may or may not meet the graded criteria. Knots and sapwood may be included.
Clear Oak Beams
Clear of sapwood and they contain a few small knots, graded or not graded. If furniture quality is required, the beams have to be taken from the highest quality logs. This will increase the cost. Clear Beams can be supplied Graded to BS 5756.
Planed on each face is another service that we can offer.
Most of our oak beams are cut from native oak collected from local managed woodland, however to ensure a constant supply we acquire logs from around the country. We do not have a minimum order, so whether you require a small lintel, a character beam for over a fireplace or a full frame we will supply to your exact requirements.
Oak logs are selected specifically for conversion into structural beams and are usually cut to order, fresh sawn from the log (commonly called green or wet). The oak will shrink slightly and crack due to the drying process. On larger sections the pith/ centre of the log is boxed in to aid the stability of the beam. Oak beams include some knots and on large sections some sapwood may be included.
We can deliver anywhere in the UK; be it one beam or a full lorry load. Please forward sizes required via the “obtain a quote” on the web site or by faxing 01768 891443, alternatively you are most welcome to telephone. We will be very pleased to hear from you.
