All of our Poplar blanks are kiln dried and some have small pippy clusters.
Widely distributed throughout Europe and the UK. The colours in Poplar vary from a pale brown to gray and can be a creamy white. It is usually straight grained with a fine even texture and is quite quick to dry with little degrading compared to most other hardwoods. It works well on the lathe, but it is best to make good finishing cuts with the bowl gouge to reduce sanding. A scraper will leave a woolly finish. Poplar is quite soft so it is important when power sanding to be careful not to create hollows. Poplar accepts stains and finishes well. Common uses include kitchen utensils, flooring, mouldings, matches etc.
Additional information
Every bowl blank has a small dimple in the centre on one face taking away any guess work when preparing for the lathe.
All our bowl blanks are supplied sawn with the edge sealed with hot wax to reduce the chance of the wood absorbing moisture if stored in damp conditions.
